Here's what Michael Dylan Welch has to say about the poem.
I wrote this haiku in response to a "challenge kigo" exercise in Geppo, the journal of the Yuki Teikei Haiku Society. The prompt kigo (season word) was "first cold night" and this poem tumbled out. In the autumn, when the evenings start to turn cold, I think we all naturally turn indoors. We might get a fire going in the fireplace and spend time with loved ones. In this case, firelight flickers on our game of dominos, and perhaps we can hear that crackling fire when we hear the click of a domino placed on a table. I hope this poem creates a warm and sensory ambiance for others…
This ku draws for me a picture of a couple (perhaps aging) who have had a fight and there is a distinct harsh click in the way he handles the dominos which is like playing with fire as it is inciting her to also react. At least that's how i read it! Thanks and regards
Lovely poem but I would like Michael's commentary on that. Thank you Team!!!
