Jan Stretch shared this beautiful backstory with us:

To the best of my memory this poem was sparked after our Christmas cactus produced a single bloom out of season last year. I remembered how much my late husband loved our indoor Saguaro cactus of 40+ years and how thrilled he was when it bloomed once many years ago, as the bloom only lasts 24 hours. I was writing a lot of grief poems after he passed and the memory of the Saguaro bloom brought joy and wonderful memories of our time in the Arizona desert.
