The poet says:

I am originally from the Puget Sound area of Washington State. People use ferries to go back and forth between the various islands and the mainland. When the last ferry leaves for the night, there will not be another ferry until the next day. My haiku moment was about the absence of the ferry and people who left on it. What remains is just the scent of creosote and salt air. It’s a very familiar scent to everyone who uses the ferry system.

I too had to Google creosote. And it took me some time to figure out its connection with ferries. Now that I know, I agree with Kala regarding its placement.
