Poetry of Resistance

In 2007, Mexican artist Jorge Blake created an art installation consisting of a massive monolithic 75’ by 13’ brick wall. A copy of Franz Kafka’s novel The Castle seems secretly and impossibly slipped under the wall, sending ripples, waves, and undulations throughout it. Showing how a single piece of literature can have a tremendous destabilizing effect on power structures, institutions, and individuals, Blake’s art work reminds us of the dangers of ossified thinking as well as the political nature of the act of writing. These featured poems this month have burrowed into my brain, like the novel under Blake’s wall, disrupting and destabilizing my thinking, challenging me to resist the social and political status quo, and inspiring me to reimagine what the world (and poetry) can be.
