Beautiful tanka. I especially like L3- "pine dunes." Such an unusual and vivid desciption that it can only refer to a few places. The last two lines too- are they zen? wistful? Perhaps both. Masterful!

Beautiful tanka. He was such an enigmatic person. He knew everything about birds and wanted to bring out an anthology on bird haiku and I remember sending him my haiku. But it neve happened.

I remember him talking about birds— I never saw him post a tanka, did not know he wrote them too. This is a vivid sketch of the Pine Barrens in southern New Jersey.
