Seasons of War

rising early to find my newspaper beneath the frangipani how I wish the war ended in spring

black and white sky behind the barricades no one to see the clouded uniforms of soldiers at war

the same moon lights at the border we give no room for solace not even for wildflowers

long winter … quite long though she knows her father will be home soon from the tug of war

bringing home the news of blossoms this year ends in the half-torn pages of a soldier’s poem

Lakshmi Iyer Trivandrum, Kerala, India

( my first tanka sequence, much thanks to the editor Richard Grahn )

hers and raises them to her face. She inhales slowly and deeply. “Mmmm,

coriander and heeng! This will sustain me all of this week …”
