I do remember the story behind that poem -- In my neighborhood I often walk by an elementary school a couple of blocks from my house. On one of my walks I noticed a woman walking with a child on the sidewalk ahead of me, probably on their way to school. They passed an area in the block where someone had planted a few sunflowers in a foot wide strip of soil between the sidewalk and the street that went on for some 30 feet. I always notice these individual stalks standing in their scraggly row. So, in that moment I noticed three different heights of adult, child and flowers and it brought to mind th…
I like the alliteration of the s sound here. May be he turns seven this summer and he's grown tall. The sunflowers indicate happiness, that joy of both childhood and summer.
