wrensong-- woodfrog embryos
wriggle in their eggs

Here is the poet's backstory for our readers.
I wrote this poem after an early spring walk looking for frog and salamander eggs in vernal pools, in a nature preserve where I also usually hear my first wren of the year singing. The wren’s song is long, complex, and ebullient. (The species name is Winter Wren, ironically.) Shortly after my walk, a friend shared close-up videos he had taken of Wood Frog and Spotted Salamander embryos developing in their egg masses. Their energetic wriggling conveyed the excitement of spring, and an energetic birdsong like the wren’s seemed like the perfect soundtrack to accompany their motion. So that’s how/why I brought those two images together to create my spring haiku.
Loved the whole set of poem!!
