“ My interest in poetry began with the French symbolists, particularly Guillaume Apollinaire. When I began to write haiku, even though I knew I wanted to eventually move beyond traditional haiku, I worked hard to internalize the "haiku rules," particularly the preclusion of figurative techniques. However, I have recently begun to return to symbolism. In this poem, 'mayflies' represent creative inspiration insofar as I experience it. I write every day, both prose and poetry, and for the most part, it is brick laying.
