“ My interest in poetry began with the French symbolists, particularly Guillaume Apollinaire. When I began to write haiku, even though I knew I wanted to eventually move beyond traditional haiku, I worked hard to internalize the "haiku rules," particularly the preclusion of figurative techniques.
