So here Ferris Gilli tells us how this haiku came about.

This is how “summer stars” happened.

On our farm when I was a child, we had a beautiful Hereford bull named Henry. He was very gentle and loved to be petted and to get treats. One evening, just as the first stars were appearing, I sat on a wooden fence and offered our curly-haired bull half a turnip. As he lifted his head and reached for it with his tongue, I noticed the faint but sweet scent of clover in his warm breath. It wasn’t until many years later, while fondly remembering Henry, that I found the haiku. It seemed to write itself. I miss those golden days.
