Annette tells us how this poem came to be written.

I wrote this haiku when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. My husband, who has some Ukrainian ancestry and is also a military buff, started closely following the war. He still spends hours on his laptop every day, tracking the progress of the battles, including the details of the weaponry and tactics used.

I too am concerned about the impact of the war on the Ukrainian people, and I don’t mean to downplay the suffering of those who are more personally affected. But I have found some humor in my situation, playing with the idea of being a war widow and with the different meanings of the word “barrage.”
