woodpecker ...
punctuates my haiku
-Charlotte Digregorio
(First place, Modern haiku category,IllinoisState Poetry Society Annual Contest, 2017)

Charlotte Digregorio says:
I always remember the moments that pertain to my haiku. I try to write creatively with the window cracked open for inspiration, unless it's brutally cold in winter here in Chicago. I like to listen to the sounds outside. Since G, I've been intrigued by woodpeckers, as I rarely hear them. In writing this haiku, I was listening to the woodpecker drum on the oak outside my window. Although woodpeckers usually search for food with their drumming, I imagined it was speaking to me in some sort of code language. Therefore, I asked it how to punctuate my haiku!
Nice one!
I really like the use of sound and wordplay in this one.
