Rich Schilling says:
Christmas is a time for celebrating, family time, a break from work, but at the time I wrote this, there wasn't a lot of celebrating. A family member was passing away in the hospital and it was the opposite of what Christmas should be. I'd like to think writing the poem helped me in some way, but I'm not sure it did. I guess I write haiku to remember moments in life, bad or good, and maybe the haiku frames each moment like a picture, something to look back at, reflect on.
Evening rain pauses—
the sparrow tilts its small head,
listening to light.
