"If we study Japanese art, then we see a man, undoubtedly wise and a philosopher and intelligent, who spends his time — on what? — studying the distance from the earth to the moon? — no; studying Bismarck’s politics? — no, he studies a single blade of grass."
----- Vincent van Gogh, in a letter to his brother, Theo van Gogh
What a deep understanding of Japanese thought and philosophy. Van Gogh was profoundly influenced by how the Japanese viewed nature, realising that it wasn't just about meditating upon the blade of grass or even becoming one with it, but actually becoming the blade of grass.
In your pursuit of writing haiku, what have you become? Have you ever been a leaf? The wind that dances with it? Or a caterpillar that rests upon it? Have you ever been a blade of grass?
